Edward Irving; born August 4, 1792, Annan, Annandale; died Dec. 7, 1834, Edinburgh, Scotland; Scottish clergyman, generally regarded as the main figure behind the foundation of the Catholic Apostolic Church; M.A., University of Edinburgh, 1809; worked as master of the mathematical school at Haddington, East Lothian; had a simlar post at Kincaldy Academy in Fife; pursued divinity studies while continuing to teach; relocated to Edinburgh in 1818 and ultimately appointed to being assistant minister and missionary in St. John's Parish, Glasgow; called by the Caledonian Church, Hatton Garden, London, in 1821, and became a popular preacher; opened a church in Regent Square in 1827; ultimately expelled from the Church of Scotland for heresy, particularly for his doctrines regarding the humanity of Jesus Christ)
