Biography/History note | Hans Thalberg (b. May 4, 1916, Vienna, Austria-d. July 15, 2003) was an Austrian diplomat and resistance fighter during World War II. Thalberg escaped Vienna in 1938, eventually arriving in Switzerland in 1942. There he founded a small group called Exile Club Austria that established contacts within émigré groups and participated in resistance activities. Thalberg returned to Austria after the war and began his diplomatic career in 1946. He was sent to Washington, D.C. where he was in charge of press and culture at the Austrian Embassy. Thalberg led the Austrian delegation in Berlin for the International Atomic Energy Agency from 1958 to 1962. He worked as head of the Department of Documentation and Information for the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1962 to 1966. In 1966 he became Austrian Ambassador to Mexico, in 1971 he was appointed Ambassador to China, and from 1975 to 1981 he was Ambassador to Switzerland. After his retirement from foreign service Thalberg became head of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs. His daughter is Jacqueline Thalberg. He is interred at Döblinger Friedhof Cemetery in Vienna, Austria. |
