Enrolled in Amherst College in Massachusetts. Taught at a school in New Jersey for two years before being admitted to Harvard Law School in 1927, earning a law degree in 1930. Moved back to Washington, D.C. where he began teaching at Howard University's law school. Admitted to the bar in 1931. Appointed as a lawyer at the Interior Department in 1933, serving there until 1937 when President Roosevelt appointed him judge of the Federal District Court in the U. S. Virgin Islands, which made him the first African American federal judge in the United States. Worked there for two years until returing to Washington, D.C. to become dean of the Howard University law school. Appointed by President Truman as governor of the Virgin Islands, then as a judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, where he served for twenty-one years. Died April 14, 1976 in Pennsylvania.) |
