Kept a three year nine-notebook diary starting September 6, 1939, less than a week after the Nazi invasion of Poland. Was put in charge of the Warsaw ghetto where he found out on July 22, 1942 that the entire population of approximately 500,000 in the ghetto would be deported. Kept his diary until the day following this announcement when he ended his life in suicide on July 23, 1942.)
