(hdg.: Straits Settlements; a joint administration for the Settlements of Penang, Malacca, and Singapore est. in 1826 by the British East India Company; under the control of the Indian Government since 1858, the Straits Settlements were created a crown colony in 1867; Labuan was incorporated as part of the Settlement of Singapore in 1907, becoming the fourth Settlement in 1912; dissolved Apr. 1, 1946 when Singapore was made a separate colony and Penang and Malacca were merged into the Malayan Union; Labuan, temporarily under British military occupation from Sept. 1945, became part of North Borneo 7/15/46)
