The Compact edition of the Dictionary of national biography, 1975 (Bernard, Sir Thomas, 1750-1818, 3rd baronet, philanthropist, born in Lincoln on April 27, 1750; he was the son of Sir Francis Bernard, 1st baronet; he was educated at a private school in New Jersey and also at Harvard University; he acted as confidential secretary to his father during the troubles which led to the governor's recall in 1769, and accompanied Sir Francis to England; from 1795 to 1806 he was treasurer of the Foundling Hospital in London for abandoned babies; he died in London on July 1, 1818 and was buried beneath the chapel of the Foundling Hospital, London, which was demolished in 1928)
