Supreme Court justice, born April 5, 1816 in Richmond, Ky. With no previous formal education, Miller entered the medical department of what is now Transylvania University in 1836 and received his M. D. degree on March 9, 1838. Practiced medicine in Barbourville, Ky. for the next 12 years. Became intersted in politics, studied law and was admitted to the bar in Knox County on March 22, 1847. A Whig, Miller moved his family and his law practice to Keokuk, Iowa where he founded the Iowa Republican Party. Appointed to the Supreme Court by President Lincoln on July 16, 1862. Served there until 1890. Died in Wahsington D. C. on October 13, 1890) |
