Moderna museet (Stockholm, Sweden) web site, viewed 5 July 2024: Olle Bærtling exhibition (born in Halmstad on 6 December 1911; moves to Stockholm in 1928 and studies banking, working as a currency dealer at Skandinaviska Banken from 1929 to 1956; had no formal art education, pictures from the late 1930s are cityscapes and views of Stockholm, moving towards abstract and expressive cityscapes, abandons Nordic expressionism by 1939 after being inspired by French art, develops an abstract style and moves away from classical composition by 1945, creates entirely abstract paintings dominated by colour fields by 1949, develops "open shapes" in 1951 with various abstract shapes that tend towards the edges and extend beyond the pictorial plane and that use not entirely straight diagonals to form open pointed angles and make the composition more dynamic, starts producing sculptures in 1956, and experiments with textiles and flags to place compositions freely in open space in 1972; participated in the founding of Groupe Espace in Paris in 1952; dies on 2 May 1981)
