Peter's expertise, while mainly focused on the period from about 1750 to the present, reached back to the 12th century. In 1973 Peter was appointed to the newly created post of lecturer in Modern Greek language and literature at the University of London. In 1981 he moved to Oxford as a university lecturer and a fellow of St Cross College, professor in 1996. After retiring in 2003 he remained an active researcher)
