Dictionary of Canadian biography, viewed online 18 May 2020 (Hennepin, Louis (baptized Antoine), priest, Recollet, missionary, explorer, historiographer; b. 12 May 1626 at Ath, in Belgium; d. c. 1705; French by education: around age 17, began his noviciate at convent of Béthune (department of Pas-de-Calais), continued studies at convent of Montargis (department of Loiret), then entered priesthood; settled at Hal (province of Brabant), preaching ministry; went to Artois convents along coast; during war 1672-1674, care of wounded and sick in Holland, Maastricht [Limburg], Seneffe (Hainaut); end May 1675, one of 5 Recollet missionaries sent to New France; sermons at Hôtel-Dieu of Quebec, preached in countryside and villages; spring 1676, went to Lake Ontario at Cataracoui (Fort Frontenac, now Kingston, Ont.), new "mission house" soon frequented by many Iroquois; back to Quebec 1678; his provincial superior requested that he accompany the explorer Cavelier de La Salle; 18 November, group left from Fort Frontenac, reached Niagara Falls, built Fort Conti winter 1679; 7 Aug. 1679-29 Feb. 1680, accompanied La Salle on his explorations; collaboration and clashes with La Salle, who sent him with an advance guard towards upper Mississippi; Hennepin later claimed that had made his way to mouth of Mississippi, in less than 30 days; returned by 10 April; 11 April, group seized by Sioux Indians, taken up the Mississippi, marched to village in Thousand Lakes Region; Hennepin adopted by chief and wives, studied tribe's habits, customs, and language; end of September, great chief gave French permission to leave; 1681, Hennepin landed at Le Havre, retired to convent of Saint-Germain-en-Laye to write up account of odyssey: work Description de la Louisiane, published 5 Jan. 1683 in Paris, went through several editions, translated into Italian, Dutch, and German; became celebrity, vicar of convent of Le Cateau-Cambrésis (1683), superior of convent of Renty, which rebuilt (1684-1687); fell into disgrace, expelled from ecclesiastical province of Artois; resided for five years (1687-92) at Gosselies, Hainaut, as chaplain of Recollet Sisters; expelled from France; tried to interest king of England in the rich countries recently discovered; obtained permission to go to Holland at king's expense, to publish his books and prepare for another crossing to America; went to Utrecht; published Nouvelle découverte d'un très grand pays situé dans l'Amérique entre Le Nouveau-Mexique et la mer glaciale (1697), Nouveau voyage d'un pars plus grand que l'Europe (1698), two works that recount his alleged trip down Mississippi, add numerous details concerning his short stay in America and troubled life in Europe; after La morale pratique du Jansénisme (1698) denounced Dutch Jansenism, the authorities of Utrecht gave him notice to leave; left for Rome July 1698; life from 1699 obscure)
