Wikipedia, December 31, 2014 (Chewelah, Washington; Chewelah is a city in Stevens County, Washington. Chewelah was labeled Chiel-Charle-Mous on the 1897 U.S. Land Office Map; On May 8, 1872, Thomas Brown received authority to establish a post office named Chewelah. The name was first used in Stevens County Commissioner Journals on May 6, 1872. That post office disbanded in February 23, 1875. In 1879, the post office was reestablished with Major John Simms, Indian Agent, as postmaster; officially incorporated on February 4, 1903; 48°16ʹ34ʺN 117°42ʹ51ʺW; 48°16ʹ50ʺN 117°43ʹ23ʺW (48.280442, -117.722927))
Washington place names, via WWW, December 31, 2014 (Chewelah is south of Colville in central Stevens County. Thomas Brown filed a land claim in 1854 that included the present town site. A military post was established in the 1860s and an Indian agency in 1873. When the Spokane Falls & Northern Railway reached Chewelah in 1889, extensive mining operations began, including a smelter. The name, adopted by settlers in 1883, is the Indian name meaning small, striped snake. Other spellings include Cha-we-lah, Chi-chel-awah, Che-we-lah and Chiel-Charle-Mous.
