Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 3, p. 244-245 (Lypkivsky, Vasyl [Lypkivs'kyj, Vasyl'], b. 19 March 1864 in Popudnia, Kiev gubernia, d. 27 Nov. 1937. Church leader, cofounder and Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). Ordained in 1891, he was elected metropolitan of the UAOC in October 1921, but bishops of the official Russian church refused to consecrate him because he insisted on preserving the independence of the Ukrainian church vis-á-vis Moscow. Soviet authorities put him under virtual house arrest from 1927 to 1937. In November 1937 he was arrested by the NKVD, charged with anti-Soviet activity, and summarily executed (although it was commonly believed that he had survived at least to early 1938))
