September 9, 1871, Delaware County, Oklahoma; name given at birth: Degataga (Cherokee name meaning: Stand Firm), later changed to Standhope Uwatie, and to Isaac Watie; he preferred the English translation of his Cherokee name. A leader of the Cherokee Nation and a brigadier general of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, he commanded the Confederate Indian cavalry of the Army of the Trans-Mississippi, made up mostly of Cherokee, Muskogee and Seminole. On June 23, 1865, Watie signed a cease-fire agreement with Union representatives for his command, he was the last Confederate general in the field to surrender)
