Athenian converted by St. Paul; tradition has made him a martyr and first bishop of Athens; he has been confused with St. Denis, 3rd cent. patron of France, 1st bishop of Paris. During the Middle Ages the Athenian Dionysius was revered as the author of certain philos. writings erroneously attributed to him since the 5th c. It is now customary to refer to the author of these writings as Pseudo-Dionysius)
