Attended Transylvania University and studied law under lawyers in Frankfort and Lancaster. Admitted to the bar September 1809 and set up a practice in Lancaster. Served as a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives 1817-1821 and in the Kentucky House from 1822-1827. Appointed to the Kentucky court of appeals 1828-1843, then resigned to practice law in Lexington. Elected again to the Kentucky House 1848 and 1851-1853. Taught law at Transylvania University 1834-1857. Served again in the Kentucky court of appeals 1864-1871. Died in Lexington on May 16, 1874. The county created in 1867 out of parts of Nicholas, Harrison, Bracken and Mason counties was named in his honor.) |
