She is a graduate of the Imperial College of London University, the University of Hawaii and the Max-Planck Institut of Behavioural Physiology in Germany. She taught at the Universities of Marburg, Bayreuth and Bonn in Germany as well as the University of Pretoria. Her love of deserts and desert animals goes back nearly four decades; the Kalahari is her favourite, ten years ago she decided to retire there. Since her retirement from academia, she has been running her own private nature reserve, Kalahari Trails)
