Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 814 (Nathan Southgate Shaler, geologist, born on February 20, 1841 near Newport, Kentucky. Entered Harvard in 1858; graduated in 1862, then returned to Harvard to teach in 1864 and 1868. In late August 1873 he was appointed Kentucky state geologist. Returned to Harvard as a professor of geology in 1884 then became dean of Harvard's Lawrence Scientific School, a position he held for the rest of his life. Wrote geological studies, essays, and plays. Died April 10, 1906 on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.)
