"In February 1719 he was appointed clerk-in-ordinary to the Privy Council in the room of his brother; he returned to a southern under-secretaryship in 1724 and then served until 1735. In 1739 he brought out an enlarged second edition of the scholarly book for which he is best known, his Grecian history, from the original of Greece, to the death of Philip of Macedon, first published in 1707, and which for some decades was a standard work ...
