German Wikipedia, Jan. 28, 2014: "Martin Hertz" (Martin Julius Hertz; born 7 Apr. 1818 in Hamburg; died 22 Sept. 1895, Breslau; a German classical philologist; as a university professor (Hochschullehrer) in Greifswald and Breslau he created foundational editions of the grammarian Priscian and the author Aulus Gellius; son of the apothecary Johann Jakob Hertz, the family settled in Berlin 1828 where Hertz attended the gymnasium Zum grauen Kloster, where his teachers awakened in him enthusiasm for ancient languages; attended Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität-Bonn, doctorate in 1842, habilitation in 1845, followed by study travels through south Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Frankreich, Italy and Austria, where he collected materials for critical editions of Aulus Gellius, Germanicus and Priscian; returned to Berlin as a private docent for some years; engaged in the revolutions of 1848/49 and functioned as a delegate to the National Assembly, thereafter completely withdrawing from politics and devoting himself to his teach and research activities; called to the chair for classical philology, U. Greifswald, 1855, where he published his editions of Priscian and Livy; called to U. Breslau in 1862, where he remained until his retirement in 1893, being rector for the academic year 1876/1877)
