German Wikipedia, Jan. 30, 2014 : "Friedrich von Raumer" (Friedrich Ludwig Georg von Raumer; born 14 May 1781, Wörlitz; died 14 Jun. 1873, Berlin; German administrative attorney, historian and politician; son of Georg Friedrich von Raumer, government official, and his wife Charlotte, born de Marées; attended the Joachimstalsche Gymnasium, followed by legal, governmental, political studies and history, U. Göttingen and Halle; several state and national government positions thereafter, but his liberal, reform-oriented opinions brought such conflict with authorities, that he decided to take another path; doctor of philosophy, U. Heidelberg, 1811, and called to U. Breslau to the chair for political studies and history, 1818/1819 rector, while 1815/1817 taking several research travels through Germany, Switzerland and Italy; called to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin in 1819, he remained at this post until his retirement in 1853 (serving 4 times as dean of the Philosophical faculty, and rector of the university 1822/23 and 1842/43), taking several research trips, and continuing to lecture until shortly before his death; apart from his teaching activities R. was politically and socially ambitious, yet managed by provocative speeches and essays to thwart those ambitions; from 1801 to his death a promoter of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, as well as establishment of several public libraries)
