C.; basketball player, athletic coach / manager; born 25 May 1932 in Taylor, Texas, United States; studied at the University of San Francisco (USF); played with the US Olympic team that won a gold medal in Melbourne, Australia (1956); led Fort Leonard Wood to the semifinals of the Amateur Athletic Union's national tournament in Denver and earned a place on the AAU All-American team (1958); signed first contract with the Boston Celtics (1958); was a charter member of the Celtic dynasty that won eight consecutive titles (1959-1966); was a coach at Brandeis University (1967-1970), head coach with the San Diego Conquistadors (1972-1973), and a Celtics coach (1983), directed the Celtics to their sixteenth NBA crown (1985-1986); became an assistant coach, then head coach with the Seattle SuperSonics (1989-1990, 1990-1992), later an assistant with the Detroit Pistons and the Celtics (1994-1995, 1995-1997); coached the American Basketball League's New England Blizzard (1997-1999); became assistant coach for the University of Hartford (2004))
