Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 2, p. 559-560 (Kirovohrad Oblast. From the 9th to 14th cent. northern parts of this oblast belonged to Kievan Rus. The territory then came under Lithuanian rule in 1362 and Polish rule by 1567. In 1739 Russia acquired nominal rule over this territory and in 1752 created a region which they called New Serbia [no publs. in LC data base], for Balkan military settlers. Under Soviet rule the territory was divided at first into 6 okruhas in 1925, and in 1932 divided between Kiev and Odesa oblasts. In 1939 some raions of the Odesa oblast were transferred to the newly restructured Dnipropetrovska oblast and the new Mykolaivska oblast. In 1939 the Kirovohrad oblast itself was established)
