William D. Ticknor (Firm : Boston, Mass.). The cost books of Ticknor and Fields, 1949: p. xv, etc. (in 1832 William D. Ticknor and John Allen formed a partnership for selling books under the name Allen and Ticknor; in 1834 the partners separated, Allen continuing in Boston until 1837 as John Allen and Co. [no publications in LC database], William D. Ticknor conducting his business without partners until 1843; in 1843 James T. Fields was admitted a a junior active partner, along with John Reed, Jr., as a silent partner, causing the adoption of the new name William D. Ticknor and Company; in 1849 the name was altered to Ticknor, Reed and Fields; in 1854 Reed withdrew and the name was changed to the classic Ticknor and Fields, lasting until the death of Ticknor in 1864)
