Studied medicine at Göttingen University, received degree of Doctor of medicine and surgery from Marburg University in 1798 after completing dissertation on Andrea Cesalpino. In 1800 was appointed regimental doctor in Saint Petersburg; travelled to the Russian East in 1801 to conduct botanical and other scientific research. Following his return to Saint Petersburg in 1805 was appointed professor of natural sciences and botany at University of Kazanʹ, collected plants and insects with his students, began to practice medicine in 1812, and to teach it in 1819, served as rector 1823-1827. Had large collection of medicinal plants and published articles on his scientific and medical observations in Kazanʹ newspaper and elsewhere, including successful treatment of patients in 1830 cholera epidemic. Studied the history and ethnography of Volga region, especially Tatars, collected Old Believer and other manuscripts and ancient coins. In 1823 studied minerals in the Urals, as well as the health and conditions of the miners.
