| Biography/History note | The International Exhibitions Bureau (Bureau international des expositions, or BIE) is the intergovernmental organization responsible for supervising and governing all international exhibitions of a noncommercial nature that last more than 3 weeks. Four principal types of exhibitions are organized under its auspices: World Expositions (Expos or world's fairs), specialized International Expos, international horticultural exhibitions, and the Triennale di Milano. For each World and International Expo, the BIE oversees the calendar, chooses the host country, regulates the organization of the event, and provides event management support. Established under an agreement signed 22 November 1928 and active since 1931, as of 2015 it includes 168 member countries. Its headquarters are in Paris, France. |
