For his dissident activities he was arrested and sentenced for more than seven years hard labor and five years internal exile. In the late 1980s some of his works and some articles about him began to appear again in the Soviet press. He has translated works in Czech, Slovak and French as well as Slovo o polku Ihorevi into Ukrainian)
