German Wikipedia, viewed August 29, 2024 (Marshall, William (Zoologe); William Adolf Ludwig Marshall (September 6, 1845-September 16, 1907); German zoologist and comparative anatomist; he began his studies of medicine and natural sciences in Göttingen and Jena; a trip to his mother's homeland in 1867 earned him a job as first assistant at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie te Leiden; during this time he received his doctorate from Göttingen in absentia; in 1872 he returned to Weimar as successor to his father and private secretary to the Grand Duchess, but continued to devote himself to his zoological studies; his work on the flea was published under the pseudonym W.A.L. Philopsyllus; he moved to Leipzig in 1879, worked as an assistant at the museum for a short time, and habilitated in 1880 as a private lecturer at the university there; from 1880 he was associate professor and from 1885 full professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the philosophical faculty of the University of Leipzig; most of his works were popular scientific publications; on April 19, 1876 he was admitted to the Leopoldina)
