Oxford dictionary of national biography WWW site, 12 Sep., 2017 (Anderson, Alexander (1748?-1811), botanist, was born in Scotland; attended Edinburgh University but did not graduate, later working at the Physic Garden at Chelsea under William Forsyth; In December 1774 he joined his brother in New York and served both there and in Philadelphia as surgeon in the British army during the War of Independence; he worked on St Lucia as an orderly in the general hospital, of which the superintendent was Dr George Young (d. 1803), the first director of the botanical garden on St Vincent; When St Vincent was liberated in 1785 the war office appointed Anderson to run the garden; received an MD from a Scottish university and in 1791 was elected fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh; Only when he became ill did he resign as superintendent of the garden in favour of Lochhead, in July 1811, a few months before his death in St Vincent on 8 September)
