Born in Camden, Ohio; Died in State College, Pennsylvania; He attended Miami University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1912. His postgraduate education was at Washington University where his Ph.D. was awarded in 1915. Joined Pennsylvania State University in 1915 [then called Pennsylvania State College], becoming a full professor in 1925)
