Graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1841. Served in the Army in the Mexican American War and the Civil War. Assumed command of the Department of the Ohio on November 15, 1861 and was instrumental in keeping Kentucky in the Union by commanding several engagments across the state, including at Bowling Green, Louisville, Bardstown, and Perryville, the last three with Confederate General Bragg's troops. Questions about his failure to prevent General Bragg's escape across Kentucky led him to be relieved of command on October 30, 1862. After a hearing that found him innocent, he was reinstated on April 25, 1863. He resigned his commission on June 1, 1864. Moved to Kentucky and became president of the Green River Iron Company in Muhlenberg County, Ky. Gov. Blackburn appointed him one of the twelve members of the first board of trustees of the Agricultural and Mechanical College (now University of Kentucky.) Died on November 19, 1898 in Paradise, Kentucky.) |
