Oct. 30, 1891 in Florence, Italy; career soldier and accomplished painter; served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of brigadier general; commanded the Union troops at the Battle of Olustee, the only major Civil War battle fought in Fla.; also served in the Mexican-American War in 1846; was asst. prof. of drawing at West Point 1850-1853; participated and commanded other Civil War battles in S.C., Pa., Va., and Md.; present at Lee's surrender at Appomattox; post-war, commanded forts in Fla., Mass., and Me.; retired from the Army Nov. 1, 1876; received the A.M. degree from Williams College in 1865; spent retirement in Europe where he painted much in watercolor; buried in Florence in the Cimitero Evangelico degli Allori)
