Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 1, p. 456 (Chornobyl; city and raion center in Kiev oblast and port on the Prypiat River in Kievan Polisia. It was first mentioned in 1193. Before 1917 Chornobyl was an autonomous (zashtatne) town in Radomyshl county with its population largely engaged in agriculture and small trade. Its main industry now is food processing, but the city also has a pig-iron foundry and a ship-repair base. Since 1972 a nuclear power plant has been located there)
