Born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. married Ann yale (1615-1698) in 1631. Came to New England as a puritan in 1637 and settled in Hartford, Connecticut. Returned to England in 1652. Appointed as Admiralty Commissioner in 1655. Elected to the House of Commons for Dartmouth in 1656)
