Studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City 1872 to 1875, then under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts until 1881, then in Paris at the Academie Julien. He returned to the Pennsylvania Academy in 1896 where he succeeded Eakins as teacher of painting. Became head of the faculty there in 1909. Died at his home in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania)
