She was, however, a best seller in her own time. The popularity of her third novel, The Children of the Abbey, rivaled that of Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho. She was born in Waterford in 1764, moving to Dublin as a child and then to England in 1794 after her marriage. Her first two novels were published under her maiden name (Dalton); she died in relative obscurity in the town of her birth at the age of 81) |
