Oxford DNB online, 14 November 2017 (Abercrombie, John (1780-1844), physician; born on 10 October 1780 in Aberdeen; In 1800 he went to Edinburgh University to study medicine; his thesis, 'De fatuitate alpina'; in 1828 he published Pathological and practical researches on diseases of the brain and spinal cord, and Diseases of the stomach, intestinal canal, the liver and the other viscera of the abdomen; in 1828, applied for the post of king's physician for Scotland and was appointed; wrote a number of essays on subjects of everyday usefulness, which were collected into a volume called Elements of sacred truth; gradually he immersed himself in Bible study and revealed religion; died suddenly on 14 November 1844 at his home in Edinburgh)
