Biography/History note | John Calvin Reed (b. April 15, 1905, Erie, Pennsylvania-d. May 23, 1993, Columbus, Indiana), geologist and Arctic specialist, received a B.S. from Pennsylvania State College in 1927 and his Ph.D. in Geology from Princeton University in 1930. In that year he joined the U.S. Geological Survey as a geologist. From 1944 to 1946 he served as principal geologist and then assistant chief Alaskan geologist of the Survey. He was staff geologist with the Territories and Island Possessions Division from 1946 to 1953, and staff coordinator in the Office of the Director from 1953 to 1960. In 1960 he was appointed executive Director of the Arctic Institute of North America from 1967 until his retirement in 1977, he was Senior Scientist at the Institute. During his service with the Geological Survey and AINA, he served as an adviser on a number of Federal and private committees relating to Arctic studies including the Executive Committee of the Division of Geology and Geography, National Research Council; Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences' Arctic Committee; U.S. National Committee for the International Geophysical Year in 1957 and 1958; a member of the Board and Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America; a Panel member of the Committee on Geography and Geophysics, Research and Development, National Military Establishment; Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Arctic Research Laboratory, Office of Naval Research; and Chairman of the Technical Subcommittee on Minerals of the Inter-Agency Committee on the Development of Alaska. |
