Born in Frankfort, Ky. on December 6, 1830, he graduated from Centre College in Danville in 1848 and from the law department of Transylvania University in 1853. Co-owned the "Bulletin", the second newspaper in Owensboro, Ky. with his brother-in-law and served as the editor. Moved to Missouri where he practiced law. Served in the Missouri legislature 1860-1861 and was a member of the Confederate Congress in Richmond, Virginia 1862-1865. Returned to Missouri in 1865 (his home was in Sweet Springs) and was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1879, serving from March 4, 1879 to March 3, 1903. Died at home on August 9, 1904.) |
