French Wikipedia, viewed October 24, 2024 (Alexandre Masson de Pezay; Alexandre-Frédéric-Jacques Masson, marquis de Pezay; French soldier, courtier and man of letters; born April 27, 1741, Versailles; he entered the second company of musketeers on April 2, 1759; having become a cornet in the régiment Royal-Étranger, he took part in the Seven Years' War; promoted to captain of the régiment de Chabot dragons in March 1763; chosen to teach military tactics to the Dauphin; by 1770 he was mestre de camp de dragons, and, at 32, chevalier de l'ordre de Saint-Louis; upon the succession of Louis XVI he was appointed inspecteur général des côtes; admitted as a corresponding member of Académie royale de marine in 1775; he was influential at court and with Louis XVI, but made powerful enemies and was exiled to Pezay, where he died on December 6, 1777)
