In 1823 he arrived in the United States to study medicine at the Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati. After traveling in Europe and in the U.S., he became the director of the Indiana Geological Survey in 1837. Surveyed and oversaw the surveying of Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. Appointed the state geologist of Kentucky in 1854, a post that he held until his death on November 13, 1860.)
