Studied conducting at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1956 at the age of twenty-one he became the youngest professor conducting at Juilliard where he continued to teach for twelve years. He was also a noted violinist at the Beaux Arts String Quartet. In 1967 he was appointed conductor and musical director of the Louisville Orchestra in Kentucky where he worked until 1979, 1971-1975 he served as conductor of the Kansas City Philharmonic.)
