Her father bought their freedom and they moved to York County, Pa. where his farm became a stop on the Underground Railroad. Worked as a washerwoman and domestic servant. Became attracted to the perfectionist teachings of Phoebe Palmer in the late 1860s and felt a call to preach, becoming a full-time evangelist in 1870. After missionary work, she moved to the temperance community of Harvey (a suburb of Chicago) and wrote her memoirs.
