Dictionary of African Biography, accessed February 17, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Lara, Alda; Alda Ferreira Pires Bareto de Lara Albuquerque; poet, essayist, physician, political activist; born 30 January 1930 in Benguela, Angola; moved to Portugal at age seventeen; studied in the department of medicine, university in Lisbon and the University of Coimbra; wrote a thesis on child psychology titled “Psychic Deficiencies Resulting from Lack of Family Care”; had ties to the Casa dos Estudentes do Imperio (CEI), a political organization composed of university students from the Portuguese colonies in Africa; returned to Angola in 1962; her works were published in several anthologies; the secret security arm of the colonial Portuguese government, Policia Internacional de Defesa do Estado (PIDE), maintained a file on her and her husband; published many of her early works in CEI's literary magazine, “Mensagem”; the Câmara Municipal of Sa Bandeira in Angola introduced “Prêmio Alda Lara para Poesia” (Alda Lara Prize for Poetry), a literary prize awarded in her honor; died 1962 in Angola)
