Micropaedia: v. 9, p. 69 (Sergius of Radonezh, Saint: a monk who became a spirtual leader of Russia as well as a diplomat, and whose efforts helped to restore and renew Russian society after the ravages of the Mongol-Tatar invasions. He was born in Rostov on May 3, 1314, and died in Radonezh (Zagorsk) near Moscow on Sept. 25, 1392. He was baptized Bartholomew Kirillovich, but took the name Sergius when he was consecrated a monk in 1337. His Monastery of the Trinity was to become a spirtual center of Russian life)
