Australian Dictionary of Biography, 1990, online, viewed 22 December 2020: Jandamarra, 1870-1897 (Aboriginal leader; born about 1870 into the Bunuba tribe which occupied mountainous country in the Kimberley district of Western Australia; arrested in 1889 for killing sheep, avoided charges by taking care of police horses, a year later returned to his territory and violated Bunuba law, so went to live at Lillimooloora; recruited as a police tracker in 1894 at Lillimooloora, killed the police officer with whom he worked and released 16 Aboriginal prisoners, formed a gang to stage an Aboriginal uprising that would transcend tribal boundaries; injured in the major battle of Windjina Gorge in November 1894, and spent two years hiding in caves; raided the Lillimooloora police station in November 1895; shot dead at Tunnel Creek on 1 April 1897; spoke English confidently; named Pigeon by a European)
