Encyc. of Ukraine: v. 4, p. 166-167 (Postyshev, Pavel [Postyšev], b. 18 Sept. 1887 in Ivanovo-Voznesensk, Vladimir gubernia, Russia, d. 26 Feb. 1939 in Kuibyshev, Russia. Communist party functionary. Played a leading role in industrialization and collectivization campaigns in the Kharkiv region and in the purge of Trotskyists and Ukrainian national-Communists. From 1934 to 1937 he was in charge of the Kiev oblast party organization, and was the real power in Ukraine. Postyshev played a leading role in the 1933 famine and its terrors. During this period he became known as the 'hangman of Ukraine'. He eventually was arrested in January 1938 under Stalin's orders, and executed in 1939. He was reabilitated in 1956)
