Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 906 (Joseph Rogers Underwood, congressman, born October 24, 1791 in Goodland County, Virginia. As a child, went to live with his uncle in Barren County, Ky. Graduated from Transylvania University, admitted to the bar and established a law practice in Glasgow, Ky. Served during the War of 1812. Served in the Kentucky legislature 1816-1820 and 1825-1826. Moved to Bowling Green in 1823 and served in the U.S. House of Representatives March 4, 1835-March 3, 1843 and the U.S. Senate March 4, 1847-March 3, 1853. Served as mayor of Bowling Green 1870-1871 and lieutenant governor of Kentucky 1875-1879. Died in Bowling Green on August 23, 1876.)
