Thorpe of the Middle Temple; he attended Worthing College, King's College, London, and the Royal College of Science; he earned his Ph. D in organic chemistry under Victor Meyer at Heidelberg; he was knighted in 1939, one year before his death; he died suddenly on 10 June 1940, aged 67, at the White House, Cooden Beach, East Sussex)
