Jitendra Abhisheki (audio) concert recordings, 1977 September 18 (Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki; born Ganesh Balawant Nawathe September 21, 1929; influenced the evolution of modern Indian classical, semi-classical and devotional music as a vocalist, composer and scholar. Born in Mangeshi, Goa, the son of the head priest of the Mangeshi temple, his father taught him the basic principles of Hindustani classical music. He received a degree in Sanskrit literature, and later received a scholarship from the Indian Government for advanced training in Hindustani classical music. In addition to fusing traditional ragas with new compositions, Abhisheki introduced the western operatic style to the Marathi theater, and composed vocal as well as background scores for 25 Marathi plays. After receiving a Homi Bhabha fellowship in the late sixties, he taught at sitarist Ravi Shankar's Kinnara School in Los Angeles. Abhisheki spent his last years in Pune, dying there on November 7, 1998)
