The family moved to Louisville soon after Sawyer was born. Received a BA in English from Wellesley College in Massachusetts in 1967. Upon graduation, went to work as a part time reporter at Louisville WLKY-TV, an ABC affiliate. Moved to Washington, D.C. in 1970 where she became assistant to Jerry Warren, the White House deputy press secretary, then administraitve assistant to the White House press secretary, then staff assistant to the president. After Nixon's resignation she accompanied him to San Clemente, California to help research his memoirs. In mid-1978, returned to Washington, D.C. and became a general assignment reporter for CBS News, then promoted to correspondent, then co-anchor for CBS, then the first female reporter on "60 Minutes") |
